 Miniature STEREOSCOPE ©1907 + 50-STEREOSCOPIC VIEWS

Miniature STEREOSCOPE ©1907 + 50-STEREOSCOPIC VIEWS

Black and white children, aged from babies to teens, plus a Native American girl and a Japanese girl, are featured engaged in all sorts of play activities in these Stereoscopic Views. Compact and light enough for travel, this tiny 4" wide x 4.25" long x 2.5" tall printed tin Stereopticon is near mint and complete with 25 two-sided cards showing "fifty views of happy children's series and other subjects interesting to all children." Clothing styles date as early as the 1870s, and the children are playing with dolls, toys, kittens and puppies, riding horses, wagons and buggies, bathing at the beach and sledding in snow. There's also an introductory card: "Fifty Stereoscopic Views // of Happy Scenes of Children // Making an Entertaining and Delightful Hour for the Little Folks" and "Copyright 1907, By Metropolitan Syndicate Press, Chicago". The last card "Contents" has a numbered listing of each scene along with a title. A few of our favorite scenes are:
#310 - The Christmas Tree: with two children, dollhouse, toys & heavily decorated tree
#316 – The Doll's Ride: thirteen large German bisque dolls in a graceful wicker buggy
#329 – Playing With Rover: a most adorable little girl and her pooch sitting near a fence
#334 – A New Phonograph Horn: Baby is peeking out from inside a large brass horn (!)
#349 – Black-Eyed Susans: a laughing black girl in a plaid dress sits in a field of flowers.
Painted forest green with fanciful Art Nouveau scrolling in gold, the tin Stereoscope comes apart into three pieces, lenses are glass, plus the view carrier is made to hold & store the picture cards all together. Back of carrier impressed: "Metropolitan // Syndicate Press // Chicago // Patent Applied For". This is an extremely difficult toy to put down!!
