35" George Dixon York, England ANEROID BAROMETER 1880s
Expertly hand-carved in oak with Eastlake/Craftsman designs of acanthus leaves and scrolling, with a shallow shelf and half-sunflower at the top, this combination Barometer and Thermometer is all-original and in working condition. Fancy 1880s lettering of barometer and thermometer markings are transferred on glazed porcelain: "Fahrenheit / Centigrade", "Stormy / Rain / Change / Fair / Very Dry", plus maker "Geo. B. Dixon / York", "Aneroid Barometer", and on the thermometer "Freezing" at zero and "Blood Heat" around 96 degrees. The 1/4" thick original beveled glass front is cracked across the middle, and the wooden rim has shrunk 1/8" with age, but these aren't annoying. A sturdy piece of iron at the top back is pierced for hanging, and a drilled hole in the back, just off center, is for making adjustments to the barometer. Measuring 35" long by 13" wide and 3.25" deep, this is an impressive piece for hanging in a hallway or in the den.
