17" KLING 1870s BISQUE LADY "Detachable Curls" PARIAN
A lovely and dignified lady of the 1870s, she is in excellent condition wearing an antique costume. *Early doll collectors called these dolls "Detachable Curls", which is a misnomer due to the fact that the tumbling curls in back were never meant to be removable, they were made in a separate mold for greater detail and permanently attached with plaster or bisque-slip. This lovely Kling Parian has cafe au lait upswept hair with the tumble of curls in back (a thin manufacturing hairline runs across her forehead and hair-part made when the curls in back were initially attached; her shoulder-plate has also been re-glued). The shoulderhead has three sew holes front & back, and measures 5” tall, 5” across the shoulders, with head circumference of 9”. Her features are hand-painted with blue eyes, black & pale red lid lines under long almost-straight brown brows. Rosy blushed cheeks and a tiny slightly smiling mouth are enhanced by the red & white glass bead jewelry of pierced earrings & necklace. The lady's shapely original body is cotton with stitched joints at hips and knees so she sits very well. Her arms are kid with stitched fingers and separate thumbs, floppy-jointed at shoulders and elbows (small repair to left hand; lower right leg is an old replacement). Sweetly dressed in 2-piece red calico with white polka-dots and a lovely lace collar. Underneath are two eyelet petticoats, a chemise, and split drawers with tucks at the hems. Cordovan leather side-button boots and cotton knit socks complete her costume. She's an exquisite and special lady.
