Antique Painted 18” Sweet folk art cloth girl c. 1870s
Here’s
a wonderful girl for lovers of antique primitive dolls! This all
original young lady’s hand-painted features have been almost kissed
away, though remnants of a pink mouth, blushed cheeks, a dot of a
nose, and diminutive spiraled eyes linger. There is no evidence she
ever had any hair, yet her work-a-day ruffled fine cotton & lace
bonnet makes hair unnecessary.
The firmly stuffed cotton body with mitten hands is
stitch-jointed at shoulders, hips & knees. From the knees, the
lower legs are black polished cotton to represent stockings. (Her toes
are worn and she has no shoes). Her costume consists of a dark red
fine wool dress with a crocheted lace-trimmed gathered lined bodice
and puffs at the top of her sleeves, with wide lace cuffs (there are
some moth holes in the wool). She wears a printed black gingham apron,
with a pocket brimmed in deep red. Under her dress are a lace-trimmed
cotton chemise and a soft wool petticoat with wonderful passementerie
and crocheted hem in coral pink wool yarn that someone lovingly made
for this charming doll. In excellent condition with no repairs, there
are no marks visible. She’s such a sweet cuddly doll who needs a
good home.
