22" Ella Smith c1915-1920 ALABAMA BABY Antique Clothing
Alabama Baby was hand made by Ella Smith circa 1915 to 1920 in Roanoke, Alabama. The molded cotton stockinet head has the molded ears and hand-painted bobbed hairstyle of Ella Smith's later dolls. In excellent condition, Baby's face is hand-painted with two-tone brown eyes, long all-around lashes, feathered brows, round rosy cheeks (small paint touch-up on left cheek) and smiling closed mouth. Her arms and legs are also painted, with sky-blue painted socks and one-strap shoes (toes of shoes flaking). There is some typical crazing because Ella Smith's paint was so thick on top of the bulky stockinet. Her muslin body is firmly stuffed, with floppy joints at shoulders and hips so she sits very well (left shoulder reinforced with extra cloth to keep it strong, no damage though). The antique baby clothes are beautiful with long-sleeve eyelet dress, fine cotton slip, pantalets, and bonnet that matches her collar and cuffs. These sweet dolls are rare and so charming to have around!!
