13” Rare BLACK & WHITE Bartenstein 1880 TWO-FACED child
Rare and most adorable, this working Bartenstein antique baby has two faces and one is Black! She is of high quality, marked "C.B. (in circle)" and in near mint all-original condition. The molded composition chest is peach and attached to the composition hood, which hides the second face, which changes by turning the knob & ring on top. Brunette mohair bangs fringe out from under Baby's attached original bonnet of lace and muslin. Both faces are happy & smiling with brown glass set eyes. Black brows, red lips and nostril dots enhance the black face, while feathered brows, finely painted lashes, big blushed dimpled cheeks and open/closed smiling mouth distinguish the white face. The body is muslin-covered carton with the works inside and two pull strings at the left side working Baby's two strong voices. One says Mama the other Papa. The lower arms and legs are wood & composition jointed at neck, shoulders, elbows and knees, attached to the body by cloth with correct floppy stitched joints. The 1880s factory dress of crisp cotton trimmed with lace and pale blue silk ribbons covers her original chemise. A petite baby for a doll carriage or cradle!
