SIX VOLLAND c1926 Johnny Gruelle Happy Children Puzzles

SIX VOLLAND c1926 Johnny Gruelle Happy Children Puzzles

Rich gorgeous colors and a fine, smooth finish on the pieces distinguishes this rare early set of six Volland 138-piece puzzles. The set is in near-mint condition with no torn or bent pieces (details below). Included are five Raggedy Ann & Andy puzzles and one by another unrelated artist (this must have been a factory mix-up as the die-cut pattern is exactly the same for all six puzzles). Volland used an extremely clever feature: each puzzle has a different color for the backing, making quick work of sorting the puzzles (sorted into separate baggies). The box is mostly intact, having a full-color illustration on the cover (two tape removal spots), reinforced corners, and only a 1/2"x 1" piece missing off one side. The label (tape mark) says: 'Volland Picture Puzzles No. F // "Johnny Gruelle Happy Children 6 Puzzles"'.
#1. Box Cover Illustration/ Tan on the back = Complete = Raggedy Ann (brown hair, pre-1926) & Andy, fairies & elves, a troubadour, the benign Witch and the Elvin King. Alot of these pieces were never separated.
#2. Orange-striped backing = Beloved Belindy, Uncle Clem Scotsman & Wooden Willie tiny German wooden toy town = (missing one piece), this is also a bonus seventh puzzle if one puts it together by the striped back; very tough but enjoyable.
#3. White backing = Raggedy Ann (brown hair) & Andy, Cleety the Clown, Pirate Chieftain, Eddie Elf, Percy Policeman, and rag man & lady = (missing 3 pieces)
#4. Sky-Blue backing = Complete = Raggedy Ann & Andy (both have red hair), Marcella & Dickie (?), Camel with Wrinkled Knees, Tired Old Horse, Witch, Fairy Queen, Pirate Chieftain and 2 pirates
#5 Fuchsia backing = Complete = Raggedy Ann (brown hair) & Andy with lots of elves, fairies and grandmother fairy
#6 Blue-grey backing = New England small town street scene, diverse activities, church steeple & mountains in background; signed "KOI" (?) in square; missing 7 pieces
Solving these puzzles, which have signed Johnny Gruelle illustrations from his various books, takes utmost patience, as the pieces do not interlock, but simply slide together – plus, there are straight edges within the puzzles. Unquestionably not for beginners!!
