21" French drinking Clown Automaton S & Halbig 1300
No damage and no repair this Circa 1880 Clown is very amusing. Wind the Automaton with the key then beautiful music plays he lifts his right arm and drinks out of his glass goblet. Left hand holds a metal walking stick with cream and dark yellow ribbons attached. Perfect original bisque hands are chunky and charming, separately molded fingers with shaped fingernails. The bisque head is marked on the back 1300-3-1/2 DEP S H.
This is a rare mold from their 1300 series with the open perky mouth. The face is adorable with it's full original mohair upper lashes surrounded by delicate painted upper and lower lashes, finely feathered brows, soft rosy cheek color with darling dimple in chin. This is a French Automaton although the head is marked S H for Simon & Halbig but it is also marked DEP which means registered in France. As you know the French did buy their heads from others companies to make their Automatons. The costume is amazing. You just won't believe how beautiful it is. Made of cream colored silk with hand sewn on different colored sequins and intermittent glass jewel decorations. Antique lace around neck, hat and cuffs. a RARE treasure you are sure to love.
