20” c1860 Display BOX-WAX-DOLL Sleep Eyes, Mohair Wig
This is a rare remarkable doll in pristine condition and museum-worthy!! All-original, and never played with or out of her wood & glass case, this c1860 German wax-over composition is in excellent to mint condition, with mohair wig and rare sleep eyes in gorgeous cobalt glass. Painted features are under the wax and retain original subtle coloring: blushed cheeks, brown brows, closed mouth and nostril dots. Her ears are pierced with the original gold lustre glass drop earrings. She also wears a gold bead necklace and gold circle pin. The wig is pale blonde mohair combed back from the temples, tied in back with bows, and falling in soft curls below her shoulders. The body is floppy-jointed at shoulders and hips with composition lower limbs. Pretty legs have molded heels black ankle boots with gold trim. Over the cotton chemise is a gauzy sheer muslin (mull) pinafore trimmed with French-blue silk bows. Cotton pantalets and at least one petticoat are underneath, and everything is trimmed with dainty lace. Hand-made in solid walnut, the case measures 28" tall, 18.5" wide and 7" deep, with picture-wire to safely hang on the wall; paper lines the inside.
