21.5" Hand-Carved c1900 German WOODEN DOLL Orig Costume
Beautifully hand-carved and hand-painted, this lovely young lady is from the town of "Immeningen" (hand-written underneath), on the Neckar River, Tuttlingen district, Baden-Wurttemberg, in the southwestern part of Germany. The 21.5" tall doll is in excellent condition (one silk ribbon in back is melting; a few 1/4" or smaller holes in back of sleeves & apron)), with wire armature supporting the wrapped-cloth body, with wooden shoulderhead and lower arms, which swivel upward at the shoulders. Her brown mohair wig hangs in two long braids down the back, with wide black ribbon attached to the bottom of each that reach the hem of her skirt. Her velvet weskit laces up the front over a cotton blouse. The large collar and bonnet have hand-made lace. Under the knife-pleated cotton apron, with cut-velvet waistband and long ribbon ties in back, is a two-tier black wool skirt with gauging onto the waistband making the skirt very full. Underneath are a soft-red wool flannel petticoat, hand-knit red wool socks and black wool hard-sole shoes. Her feet are screwed to the wooden base. Also written under the base is "a. N." (on the Neckar river) and "frau", plus a round green stamp in German. German Trachten (costume) dolls of this age and quality are rare finds indeed!
