" PAPIER-MACHE molded bosom Milliner's Model c.1840s
A lovely papier-mache in
excellent condition, with molded & painted hair center parted, ears
exposed, and braided bun in back – brush strokes represent finer hair
at the edges. Her face has a gentle expression with painted brown
eyes, a straight nose, and a slightly smiling pink mouth. Blushed
cheeks and single-stroke brows complete the young lady’s face. The
shoulders have an 1/8th” painted border of rose around the
edge. Slight paint wear slight crazing on shoulderplate which is
normal for a doll this age. The very deep shoulder plate, swelling in
front for bosom, is on a stiff leather body with a very tiny waist,
carved wooden lower arms with long fingers together, and separate
thumbs. Lower wooden legs with flat feet have cobalt blue painted flat
shoes. All of the limb joints are covered with the blue strips of
paper usual for these dolls. This lady’s morning gown of tan cotton
buttons up the front with 9 pearl buttons is trimmed in black velvet
bands and delicate lace. Antique cotton lace-edged drawers end at the
same length as the dress, with one plaid and one cotton petticoat plus
an embroidered chemise. She is a sweet early doll. This is a fantastic early doll
seldom seen. Very clean from a non smoking home.
