19" SWISS WOODEN "UNTERWALDEN" Costume c1920 Cage Base
Woodworkers in Switzerland are known for some of the most beautiful carvings, and the serene expression on this young woman's face is the epitome of that craft. Most likely carved of linden wood, lower arms are wood from the elbow, while hair, head and torso were carved in one piece. Subtle hand tinting enhances the pink lips, black intaglio eyes, and black hair, which is carved full at the sides and into a low bun in back. The cage base is wire, much like a lampshade frame, and upper arms are sawdust-stuffed cloth. Her costume represents the Unterwalden region of Switzerland, best recognized by the black velvet hat with high crown, shallow brim and embroidered black braid trim, with ribbons tied under her bun and hanging to the ground in back. The cardboard base inside her hat is printed "Skizzenbi..." which is German-esque for pattern/design. Gorgeous sage-green brocade apron covers the tan skirt (faded from black, but correct for the region) with wide moiré sash ribbons in back, and cream brocade is pleated around her neck & décolletage. The interesting bodice is overshot-woven cotton hand-beaded with black and red glass beads. Three strands of marcasite beads encircle her neck, with a centered rhinestone on the lowest strand. Fabulous and rare, her tranquility is irresistible.
