9.25"x 13" French 1890s WOODEN JIGSAW PUZZLES 4 in Box
This is a set of four colorful
lithographed wooden jigsaw puzzles contained in their slim original
wood & cardboard box. The lid has an illustration of a French
fisherman and child with decorative paper edging, and the box sides
are wrapped with floral paper and gold edges. A tiny sticker is on the
box bottom: "Samaritaine // 2F.45". The box measures 13.75"x 10", and
the puzzles are 9.25"x 13", each is wrapped in loose cellophane with
thin cardboard laid behind. The four puzzles each have 20 large
interlocking pieces, and printed intertwined initials: "JFL". A
Moorish boy leads a very large ostrich with two children in a howdah;
a Bedouin guides a camel with a fancy covering and howdah with three
little children; a Provence fisherman, wife and child stroll along the
beach; and the last shows a fancy-dress outdoor party with adults
dressed in 18th century costumes playing "Blind Man's Bluff" at a
country estate. There is slight warping to some of the puzzle pieces,
but they still fit together well; the box bottom needs partial
reattaching. These are beautiful and fanciful illustrations of idyllic
French country life!
