5" French Bisque 1920 Glass Eye BRITTANY FRANCE Rare
From the village of Quimper, in the Finistiere region of Brittany, France, this near-mint all-original miniature boy wears his traditional costume called "Bigouden". The tambour embroidery is particularly associated with Quimper, as are the very full tightly pleated pants. Bisque head is perfect with no damage or repairs, incised: "PARIS // UNIS FRANCE (in oval) // 1 – 301 – 1 // (?)/0". He has never been undressed or played-with, and the costume is sewn to his 5-piece body with molded brown heeled boots, and jointed at neck, shoulders and hips. Set glass eyes are blue surrounded by finely painted lashes under auburn brows that match his mohair wig. His open-closed mouth has painted tiny upper teeth, and a dimpled chin. The embroidered shirt, vest, leggings and wide-brim hat are wool felt, and his pants are heavy cotton. Finest green velvet ribbon makes his hatband, secures his hat to the back of his vest, and a hanging loop. He's marvelous!!
