8" German Bisque 1890s CLOWN ON MECHANICAL DONKEY
In excellent to mint condition,
all-original with no damage and no repair and working. Darling little
bisque-head clown sits atop a key-wind mechanical donkey, which hops
and jumps when wound. This piece is 8” tall and 8” long and 4” wide.
The 6.5" clown's bisque head is incised: "SPBH" with the PB in a star
which is Schoenau & Hoffmeister porcelain factory. He has blue glass
eyes surrounded by painted long lashes, under wide brows, with big
rosy cheeks and four miniscule upper teeth in his open mouth. The
clown's body is wire with painted wooden hands and elongated feet. His
costume is printed calico in pink check and purple floral. A fringe of
mohair plush peeks below his green calico pointed hat, and a large
lace neck ruff and lace cuffs finish his costume. Donkey has amber
glass eyes with painted details around eyes, nostrils and grinning
mouth. His body is wood & wire with wooden legs and black-painted
hooves. The covering is grey wool felt and his harness is oilcloth
with brass brads and metal roundels. Perfect in a circus collection &
amusing alone! From a non smoking home.
