RARE 19” German Bisque TWO-Faced Bartenstein Ca. 1910
This most gorgeous antique baby actually has two faces under her attached papier-mache hood and molded blouse shoulderplate. She is of the highest quality, beautiful working condition with two pull-strings, original fringe of palest blonde mohair, and sparkling blue spiral glass paperweight eyes in both (!) faces. The cloth-over-carton body is stamped: "Deutsches Reichs-Patent // U.S.P. No. 243 752." and "Made In Berlin". Sturdy composition lower arms and legs are attached with cloth; floppy stitched joints at hips and knees allow Baby to sit, floppy shoulders allow her arms to move. Baby's smiling happy face has feathered brows, finely painted lashes, dimpled chin, plump rosy cheeks and open smiling mouth with tiny porcelain teeth. Pull the forward string and Baby cries "Mama" as the face switches to the angry crying baby. The unhappy crying face has s-curved feathered brows, rosy cheeks and wide-open/closed mouth with molded tongue and gums. There are back-to-back ears at the sides, but only one face can be seen at a time; a lace and silk crepe bonnet hides the hood and the second face. She is delightfully dressed in antique doll clothes: cotton drop-waist dress trimmed with lace and tucks, organdy pinafore with black ribbon beading through lovely lace, lace-hemmed slip, and pantalets with hand-stitched left-side hole for her pull-strings, cotton stockings with ribbon garters, and beautiful white kid-leather scallop-edge shoes (size "4"). This fascinating Bartenstein Two-Face baby is precious and rare with glass eyes twice!
