31” Religious Figure Ca.1880’s MADONNA & CHILD
Serene and ethereal, this Madonna and Child stands 31" tall, 16" wide and 9" deep, in excellent condition. Made from a solid composite material and painted red, green & olive, with touches of gold leaf, we are dating the figure circa 1800’s to possibly as late as 1890, but she could be much earlier. Very fine details are subtly painted and carved in patterns on Madonna's robe and sash. Madonna's face is solemn and saintly; the Child's face is sweet and angelic. Formed in a mold, collars, cuffs and swirling details were added by hand. There are 27 composite roses on wires outlining the figure. A sea-child, against the base with carved waves, supports the Madonna. A 1.5" triangular chip is off the base at right front, and there are some paint rubs, but no repairs. This exquisite piece radiates a quiet tranquility. This came from a well known estate in Denver Colorado.
