Antique Cloth 20”-c1900 BABYLAND RAG BLACK MAMMY
This wonderful and charming
antique black cloth doll is a Babyland Rag, with hand-painted face, in
excellent all-original condition. This doll has a gold-printed green
ribbon stating that she came from Aunt Len's Museum and was auctioned
by Sotheby's in 1994 after the museum closed. Lenon Holder Hoyte ran
one of the first Doll Museums in New York City and concentrated on
Black Dolls. There are many articles have been written on the museum.
This beautiful dolls hair is crinkly black wool in tufts on the sides
of her face and up under the kerchief. Her head is brown cotton with
amber eyes, rosy cheeks and two-tone mouth; the body is brown twill
with mitten hands, and floppy-joints at shoulders, hips & knees. The
white-dotted red cotton dress has long sleeves and lace trimming
collar & cuffs; there is some fading. A windowpane-check dimity apron
covers the skirt. Her cotton petticoat and matching pantalets are
lace-trimmed, plus she wears a chemise and black knit socks. Very
sweet and hard to find with hand-painted features!!
From a non smoking home.
