Ca.1870 STAFFORDSHIRE Whippet Or GREYHOUND/HARE Figure
Judging by the size of the Hare, this must be a Greyhound instead of a Whippet dog. He is true Staffordshire heavy china, in near-mint condition. We say near mint because there is some paint on his left ear. How nice it is that he's modeled over a bush – so that he's perfectly supported to avoid breakage. The modeling is wonderful, his ribs can be felt along his sides, and the bush and ground cover are definitely ferny leaves. Overall measurements: 9.75" long, 10" tall and 3.75" deep. Beautifully hand-painted with myriad greens on the base, along with rough-work grassy patches, and gold lustre around his collar. He's a prize pooch! Circa 1870 but probably 1840.
