ANTIQUE DIPLOMAS Normal College NY-1879, U City NY-1877
Offered here are two college graduation diplomas, for John Stephen McGill and his sister Mary Anne Theresa McGill. Both diplomas date to the late 1870s and have fine engraving and beautiful lettering. John's is printed on real sheepskin vellum, written all in Latin and inscribed "John Stephen McGill" dated "15 May, 1877", and signed by college dignitaries: D. R. Jagaer, Professor; Howard Crosby LLD; John Taylor Johnston; Smith Ely Jr. The "University of the City of New York" seal is impressed at bottom center. The sheepskin measures 18.75" wide and 15" high, the short edges have some wrinkling but no tears (a shallow 1 1/8" slice is at the upper left corner). Mary Anne's diploma from Normal College of the City of New York has a fine engraving of a group of young women between a field of wheat sheaves and large leafy trees. The weighty paper is inscribed "Mary Anne Theresa McGill" dated "26th June, 1879", and signed by college dignitaries: Thomas Hunter/President; Benj. F. Manierre; William Wood, Pres. Board Of Education. Measuring 23.75" wide by 18.75" high, the long edges have some fraying, and there's a 3.5" straight tear halfway down the right side.
