13.5” TWO-FACED BABY German Bisque glass eyes c.1880s
This most gorgeous working
Bartenstein antique baby actually has two faces! She is unmarked of
high quality, is sweetly dressed and in mint condition. Baby’s
artistically painted happy face has spiral blue glass set eyes, dark
brows, finely painted lashes, big blushed dimpled cheeks and
open/closed slightly smiling mouth with four tiny molded teeth. The
unhappy crying face has blue-grey spiral set eyes, angry brows, big
blushed cheeks and open/closed mouth with molded tongue. A composition
chest plate is molded to look like a bodice, the compo hood hides the
second face and blonde mohair curls out from under for bangs. The
original body is carton with the works inside and two pull strings at
the left side for turning the head – pull the bottom string for the
happy face, the upper string rotates the head back to the screaming
face. A string on the right side makes a loud cry when pulled. Lower
arms and legs are composition attached to the body by cloth with
floppy stitched joints. Baby is adorably dressed in a long cotton gown
with bodice ruffle, lace and tucks plus a lace-hemmed petticoat. A
tatted & crocheted bonnet frames her dear face sweetly. Bartenstein &
information written in ink on chest plate. Small sized for doll
carriage or cradle, baby is precious and rare, so adorable!
