26 Pre-Greiner 1850 GLASS-EYE PAPIER-MACHE AllOriginal
A fascinating attic find, this glass-eyed papier-mache has molded & painted hair in the 'covered wagon' style - center parted with nine sausage curls. She is in excellent condition and all-original. A so-called Pre-Greiner, the unmarked shoulderhead is 8" tall and 8" across, with 13" head circumference. Her sweet face has a serene expression with black glass eyes, painted super-fine upper lashes, slightly smiling pink mouth and she obviously had a child-mama who washed her face often. There has been no repainting and the head retains the original finish (minor repair to two curls in back and tops of shoulders). The shapely cotton-stuffed body is sturdy cotton twill, and the long tan leather arms have separately stitched fingers. A flat bottom and floppy stitch-jointed hips and knees make her sit very well. Every miniscule stitch on her clothing was sewn by hand, and whether made for the doll, or cut down from her little owner's clothing, is superior in fabric and construction and who can resist that cinnamon-pink calico dress? Underneath chemise, petticoat and pantalets, plus holey wool socks. She's so charming and wonderful!!
