19" LENCI GOOGLY-EYED “La Modistina” LADY 1935s RARE
Lenci's "La Modistina", the lady who loves hats, wore a plaid taffeta gown with a variety of bonnets over the years. Our all-original lady is in good condition, made of felt with cotton torso, jointed at neck, shoulders and hips, with generous flat feet so she can stand alone. Her blonde mohair wig has the original coiled bun of long braids in back and soft poufs in front. She has huge blue hand-painted googly eyes, upper lashes, raised molded eyebrows, subtly blushed cheeks and deep red open-closed mouth with coral highlight on the lower lip; there is no repainting. Modistina wears a black taffeta poke bonnet with pleated ruffle around the brim (the top edge is worn but the buckram lining is black so it isn't obvious). Her 1840s-style gown is in a muted plaid of cream, orange, purple & black, trimmed with a pleated black taffeta ruffle & covered buttons, black velvet bows and dainty lace collar. There is an area of taffeta melting in front near the hem, which can be hidden in the volume of her skirts, and melting on the left hip of the skirt hidden by her arm. Black lace mitts cover her hands, and all of her fingers are stitched separately. Underneath is a crispy near-mint Lenci chemise and organdy pantaloons with double-ruffle hems. At some point in her life a flannel petticoat was added. Black felt slip-on shoes and silky fine-knit socks complete the outfit. This exact costume is shown on page 63 in Dorothy S. Coleman's "Lenci Dolls". She's wonderful!! From a non smoking home.
