5.5” SUPER RARE Dewees Cochran INFANT in CRADLE 1950s
Only twelve of these babies,
handmade by Dewees Cochran, were ever made! The molded and painted
latex babies were made for a church bazaar in Norwich, Vermont.
Norwich-style pine cradle in miniature is included measuring 7.5” long
x 5” wide x 3.75” high; a cotton-covered mattress is inside. The
darling baby has a one-piece torso and legs with jointed shoulders and
neck, head marked: “DC”. His dear tiny face is sleeping and somewhat
‘fretful’ with a slight frown and pout. Closed sleeping eyes, brows,
cheeks, nostrils and mouth are exceptionally subtle and deftly painted
by Ms. Cochran. The straight arms have tiny fisted hands and the feet
are molded together with space between the knees (so he can wear a
real flannel diaper). Baby’s wig is finest almost- invisible blonde
human hair in a simple thatch from his pate. Yellow flannel lined in
ivory rayon forms his cap and robe with matching featherstitching,
ties and tassel. Baby, cradle and clothing are excellent to mint
condition. Extremely rare and precious, don’t miss this chance to own
an original Dewees Cochran doll. The provenance is a original paper
that came with the doll which states: “Dewees Cochran miniature infant
boy, newborn and scowling, 5˝” in old, pine cradle, a copy of old
Norwich cradle, handmade by Ernest Brigham from a scale drawing by
Dewees Cochran, Cradle 7˝” long. Only 12 of these were to be made. We
don’t know how many are in existence to day.
