24" Wyeth Family c1890 BLACK CLOTH AMERICAN FOLK ART
A tag attached to this charming, floppy and huggable antique black cloth doll reads: "American Black Folk Art Rag Doll, 19th Cent. Andrew Wyeth family." On the other side: "sister Anna McCoy // Anna B. McCoy family of Chaddsford PA & Maine". In excellent condition, black sateen is stitched to make her one-piece head and body with attached arms. Legs are stuffed black lisle stockings with a child's three-button leather ankle boots on her feet. Her hair is raw wool from an actual black sheep – not dyed! The wool is stitched to her head and decorated with pink silk ribbons. Eyes and smile are embroidered; she's been well loved and kissed causing slight fading to her face. The original dress is black-striped pink challis trimmed with skinny black velvet ribbons over matching lace-trimmed slip and pantalets. This rare find, with provenance from the well-known American Wyeth family, was obviously a small child's pride and joy!!
