22 Antique RARE Sitting Nobleman JAPANESE c.1900
Usually found in smaller sizes,
this impressive rare large sitting Japanese Nobleman probably Noh
Theatre-type Uizan Ningyo - is in excellent condition and
all-original. He is carved of wood with lower arms and head covered in
gofun/crushed oyster shells. He measures 22 from his topknot to
heels, 17 topknot to hiney (if standing hed be 32 tall); accounting
for the volume of the costume, he is 14 wide and 20 from back of
hiney to left toe and will sit perfectly in a straight chair or on
shelf edge. He has a serious expression with large almond-shaped glass
eyes, multi-stroke painted brows and down-turned red mouth, some paint
loss to lips. Brush strokes at the sides of his face represent the
hair from which mohair is inserted and pulled up into the cord-wrapped
topknot, his head is painted black underneath the hair, missing some
hair on left side and in back, tiny split back of neck. The body is
wood wrapped in straw and paper with wired limbs, neck swivels
slightly. The feet are carved as curved thick-soled boots with fur
uppers and deep blue brocade to the knees. The carved hands are very
graceful with the right fisted to hold something and the left
beckoning, some loss of gofun. His jacket is peach, sage & pale yellow
brocade with four white collars and cuffs underneath, wide deeply
pleated pants are of mulberry brocade with round white symbols. The
waist wrap is replaced. A ningyo this large and well kept, coming from
a famous collection, is truly a rare item!
